Osteoporosis
As bones age, they weaken and become more prone to fracturing.
Bone loses density and becomes more porous as a result of osteoporosis. Normally, bone is constantly changing with new bone cells replacing the degenerating ones. As people age, there may be a decrease in the production of new bone, which weakens the bone and increases its vulnerability to fracture. 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 in Ireland will fracture a bone because of Osteoporosis in their lifetime.
The good news is that bone can increase in density again from supplementation if required and through exercise. From a physiotherapy point of view, exercise can help in both the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Exercise needs to gradually increase to help improve bone quality.
